Question 1

What is the best way to store food long term?

Accepted Answer

When it comes to long-term food storage, the most reliable method combines three things: a dry, low-oxygen environment, a cool and dark location, and pest-proof packaging. For dry staples like rice, beans, and wheat, put the food in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers, then seal them inside food-grade 5-gallon buckets with gasket lids. Store them at or below 70°F (21°C) away from sunlight.

Question 2

Are Mylar bags better than plastic containers for long-term food storage?

Accepted Answer

For long-term storage, yes. Mylar blocks light, oxygen, and moisture far better than clear plastic. Plastic buckets and airtight containers are best used as a rigid outer layer that protects the Mylar bag from rodents and punctures, so the two work best together.

Question 3

How many oxygen absorbers do I need per 5-gallon bucket?

Accepted Answer

A common guideline is 2,000 cc of oxygen absorbers per 5-gallon bucket of dry grains or beans. Dense foods like rice and beans need less per volume than loosely packed foods like pasta or flour. Use absorbers immediately after opening the package, and reseal unused ones in an airtight jar.

Question 4

Can you use oxygen absorbers with every type of food?

Accepted Answer

No. Oxygen absorbers suit dry foods with low moisture, such as white rice, dried beans, wheat, oats, and pasta. Avoid them with foods that are high in moisture or oil, such as brown sugar, salt, dried fruit with high moisture content, and nuts or whole-grain flours that can go rancid.

Question 5

How long can rice be stored for?

Accepted Answer

Properly packaged white rice can last 10 to 30 years. It should be stored in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers inside sealed buckets, kept cool and dry. Brown rice contains natural oils and typically lasts only 6 to 12 months in standard storage.

Question 6

Are food-grade buckets safe for storing food?

Accepted Answer

Yes, if they are made of HDPE plastic and marked food-grade (look for the number 2 recycling symbol and a food-safe label). Avoid buckets previously used for paint, chemicals, or other non-food products, since they can leach contaminants into food.

Question 7

What are the best airtight containers for pantry storage?

Accepted Answer

Look for containers with a silicone gasket, locking lid, BPA-free material, and a stackable shape. Glass is ideal for flavor retention and durability, while BPA-free plastic is lighter and cheaper. See the StowageGear buying guide for tested picks.

Question 8

What temperature is best for long-term food storage?

Accepted Answer

Aim for 50–70°F (10–21°C). Every 10°F increase in temperature can roughly halve the shelf life of stored food, so a basement or interior closet is better than a garage or attic.
